If in doubt, ask a Doctor.
I’m having to trim people from my social media accounts who seem genuinely to believe that the best reaction to the atrocities visited upon Paris last night is to do things just as atrocious.
I sat through last night’s unfolding coverage feeling sick. Much of the western world felt the same way (because we don’t get rolling coverage of equally appalling acts committed more often in culturally different parts of the world). There’s a weird sort of survivor guilt at play worldwide, bringing out the best and worst of people. I understand the knee jerk reaction, but there are particular views and perspectives I don’t want to wade through when I jump online. Especially not today. I’m sorry if you’re one of those people, for several reasons.
Paris last night was blood and horror, but the rest of the time it’s one of the most inspiring places on Earth, where some of the most progressive leaps in western civilisation have birthed. I’ve been just once and briefly, but it captured a piece of me.
My thoughts are with the those directly affected by yesterday’s murder spree. I hope and trust the spirit of that city makes a swift recovery.
