Holi Fever

March 20, 2011 by Richard Wright in Journal, Life

It’s Holi, my favourite Hindu holiday. Ostensibly, it marks the end of winter, where light defeats darkness. In actuality, it’s a lot of Indians getting drunk, hurling powdered paint around, and dousing each other with water. To participate, you simply step outside. The assumption is that if you are outside, you are a participant, and therefore fair game for paint smearing and drenching.

It’s impossible to be grumpy while being smeared in colour and having thimbles of rum tipped into your mouth. Try it for yourself. It’s a grump-free experience.

So, happy Holi, wherever you are!
