Weighing Hearts
Okay, after finishing the first draft of Craven Place, printing it off, and tucking it under the bed to mature for a few weeks, it’s time to turn my attention to my third project of the year. For the next month or so, I’ll be spending a good deal of my time in front of the computer revisiting Amsterdam, where I’ll be completing the second Dexter Lomax novella The Weighing of the Heart.
As with Craven Place, The Weighing of the Heart is a massively overdue project, started in 2005 and allowed to wilt on my hard drive. About 7000 words exist, but many of them are worthless. I’ve printed them off, so that I can transcribe the few useful ones into the notebook I’ll be using to write the story longhand during March. The story picks up Dexter’s adventures after The Flesh Remembers, an early version of which you can for the time being still download from this site, entirely gratis (I say early, because the whole this is due to be reworked when Weighing and the untitled third novella are complete). I’m looking forward to digging into it, and to handwriting again after I had so much fun doing so with Hiram in January.
Today has been spent re-reading The Flesh Remembers, and to my surprise quite enjoying it (yes, surprise – I’m always surprised when I read something I wrote a while ago, and find I still like it). This evening and tomorrow morning, I’ll put together a synopsis of how I think Weighing should go, and then the writing begins…
