It's been so long since I read the book that I can't judge - however, shortly after writing the above I picked up the Penguin Classics edition. It's loitering in the TBR pile at the moment, and when John Connolly has finished making Charlie Parker dance for my amusement, I'll dip in and do a compare and contrast...

Part of me is dreading it ;-)

For years, I've just listened to the album and loved it every time, but last year I actually sat down and read the book, and found myself realising how appalling the liberties Doreen and Jeff Wayne took in "adapting" the story for the album.

Nevertheless, I still love the album, but compared to the book the narrative is a right-mess.

heh heh, I must admit I have a real soft spot for that album as well. Burton is great and don't forget Daivd Essex as the Artilleryman and Phil Lynot as the Parson. I was trying to think why it works and why indeed it gets away with with what on paper could (should!) easily be pompous, pretentious nonsense. I think one reason is the storytelling - it is a great story and this is an evocative telling of it - and like you might forgive a good film the odd dodgy moment, so you do here....
