Hi Elizabeth. There are no short cuts or contacts that can help, I’m afraid. Write stories, edit them mercilessly, and find a good proofreader (preferably somebody who’ll be honest, rather than family, who will lie to make you happy).

Digest everything at http://www.ralan.com/wrthelp.htm, particularly the bits on manuscript format – you’d be amazed how many stories are rejected on these points alone.

Submit your stories to markets at http://www.ralan.com (ONLY when your story matches what the editors say they’re looking for, or you’re wasting everyone’s time), get rejected over and again, and eventually, if your stories are good, you’ll sell something. Repeat, ad infinitum. Your list of contacts will grow, but you have to earn them.
